JOBS

JOIN OUR TEAM

According to our staff survey (July 2024), the best things about working for Wanaka Stone are the good people, supportive bosses, and great locations. One person describes it as “Welcoming, trustworthy, supportive and awesome!” Our team is made up with people from the Czech Republic, Fiji, Nepal, New Zealand, and the UK.

Many of us have experienced being a foreign worker overseas and we make sure everyone who works with us is welcomed and treated with respect. We are strongly against the exploitation of workers and we provide support and advice for our migrant workers to help them settle into living and working in Central Otago.

We encourage everyone to feel comfortable talking about their mental health and have team members inducted with Mates in Construction, an organisation that supports positive wellbeing in our industry. We live the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Diversity: The presence of differences within the workplace. That can mean differences in race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, and socioeconomic class.

Equity: The act of ensuring that processes and programs are impartial, fair, and provide equal possible outcomes for every individual.

Inclusion: The practice of ensuring that people feel a sense of belonging in the workplace. This means that every employee feels comfortable and supported by the organisation when it comes to being their authentic selves.

We provide everyone with high quality workwear for comfort and safety. And we take safety seriously; we’re proud of our excellent safety record and everyone who works hard to achieve it.

The roles in our quarries are physically demanding and suit people who like working outdoors and who are physically fit

Permanent Quarry Workers

AUGUST 2024 UPDATE:
We have a full team and we’re not currently recruiting permanent workers.

Our quarry workers operate the guillotine and cut, trim, and shape stone for use in the stonemasonry industry. They work in the paving area selecting and trimming large flat rocks into garden pavers. They also operate machinery such as the loader, conveyor, and generator. They carry out pre-start checks on the digger and use it to lift bags of rock. Our quarry manager is responsible for the more complex work.

We look for people who are used to working outdoors and are already fit and ready to start a physical job.

Experience operating machinery would be an advantage. General mechanical aptitude is a must (by that we mean someone who could start a water pump, do an oil change, or hear when a motor is under strain). You must be able to learn quickly, and have a practical approach to problem solving.

This role could suit someone who has worked as a labourer in farming, construction, or similar. There is the potential to turn this job into a career since we will support quarry apprenticeship training for the right person.

In return, we offer:

  • Wages that are reviewed at least every 12 months.
  • Guaranteed hours: 30 hours per week guaranteed (even if the quarry isn’t operating), but we normally work between 40 and 45 hours per week.
  • Work/life balance: We understand that life sometimes has to take priority over work, and we approach this with compassion.
  • Free staff transport for people living in Wānaka or Cromwell.
  • We offer a wellbeing allowance of up to $100 per person per month to be spent on things like physio, massage, counselling, dentistry, gym membership, etc.

Attitude is everything – we need someone who will do their share of the work and contribute to our culture of safety and inclusion.

Because we take safety seriously, successful applicants will need to pass a pre-employment medical, drug test, and police check before starting work with us. You must have a full driving licence and already be living in New Zealand to be considered for this role.

Casual Labourers – Cluden

We are now looking for workers for the paving area at Cluden Quarry. They will be selecting and trimming larger flat stones typically used in gardens as paving and stepping stones.

The work is very physical and suits people who are used to working outdoors and are already fit and ready to start a physical job. You must be able to lift stones weighing around 20 kg from the ground to waist height and into a bag multiple times per day. Full training in safe lifting techniques will be given before work is started.

This is a casual position where you get paid an hourly rate ($29.66) plus 8% holiday pay on top, giving a total hourly rate of $32.03 before tax. We provide free transport from Wānaka to the quarry.

This role would suit someone looking for full time work from now until around mid December. We can only offer work in the paving area when the weather is good as it’s unsafe to operate in wet conditions. We close down operations in the height of summer when it is too hot to operate and re-start again around February.

There may be the opportunity to move to a permanent role over the coming months.

If you’d like to find out more, please contact Kath on 0273972988 or [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you.
