JOBS

JOIN OUR TEAM

According to our staff survey (Dec 2021), the best things about working for Wanaka Stone are generous pay, inclusive teammates, supportive bosses, and great locations. Our team is made up with people from Brazil, the Czech Republic, Nepal, New Zealand, and the UK.

Many of us have experienced being a foreign worker overseas and we make sure everyone who works with us is welcomed and treated with respect. We are strongly against the exploitation of workers and we provide support and advice for our migrant workers to help them settle into living and working in Central Otago.

We encourage everyone to feel comfortable talking about their mental health and have team members inducted with Mates in Construction, an organisation that supports positive wellbeing in our industry.

We provide everyone with high quality workwear for comfort and safety. And we take safety seriously; we’re proud of our excellent safety record and everyone who works hard to achieve it.

The roles in our quarries are physically demanding and suit people who like working outdoors and who are physically fit.

Permanent Quarry Worker – Cluden

We are recruiting for a full-time, permanent quarry worker at Cluden Stone Quarry.

The starting/training wage is $29.66 per hour for those with limited or no experience. We would pay up to $35.00 per hour for someone already experienced in operating heavy machinery in a quarry and in using a stone cutting guillotine.

Our quarry workers operate the guillotine and cut, trim, and shape stone for use in the stonemasonry industry. They work in the paving area selecting and trimming large flat rocks into garden pavers. They also operate machinery such as the loader, conveyor, and generator. They carry out pre-start checks on the digger and use it to lift bags of rock. Our quarry manager is responsible for the more complex work.

We are looking for people who are used to working outdoors and are already fit and ready to start a physical job.

Experience operating machinery would be an advantage. General mechanical aptitude is a must (by that we mean someone who could start a water pump, do an oil change, or hear when a motor is under strain). You must be able to learn quickly, and have a practical approach to problem solving.

This role could suit someone who has worked as a labourer in farming, construction, or similar. There is the potential to turn this job into a career since we will support quarry apprenticeship training for the right person.

In return, we offer:

  • Wages that are reviewed at least every 12 months.
  • Guaranteed hours: 30 hours per week guaranteed (even if the quarry isn’t operating), but we normally work between 40 and 45 hours per week.
  • Work/life balance: We understand that life sometimes has to take priority over work, and we approach this with compassion.
  • Free staff transport for people living in Wānaka.
  • On completion of your 90-day trial period, we offer a wellbeing allowance of up to $100 per month to be spent on things like physio, massage, counselling, dentistry, gym membership, etc.

Attitude is everything – we need someone who will do their share of the work and contribute to our culture of safety and inclusion.

Because we take safety seriously, successful applicants will need to pass a pre-employment medical and drug test before starting work with us. You must have a full driving licence and already be living in New Zealand to be considered for this role.
